Supplying face mask exemption letters to patients

Guidance note for patients requesting exemption letters

We are aware that some patients might be understandably anxious about the Government’s recent announcements around the use of face masks in various public settings.

GPs are unfortunately not in a position to provide individual risk assessments or letters for patients who feel that they should be exempt from wearing a face mask.

The government guidance on exemptions suggests there is no requirement for evidence for exemption, therefore it is sufficient for an individual to self-declare this.

Similarly, practices are under no obligation to provide letters of support for anyone who does not fall under the list of exemptions but considers themselves to have another reason to be exempted.

PRINCIPLE – Platform Randomised trial of INterventions against COVID19 In older peopLE

The Trial

As yet, there are currently no known treatments for COVID-19 that have been proven to be effective. Our trial aims to evaluate potential treatments as they are identified. To be able to do this, we aim to test one or more suitable, potential treatments for COVID-19, as soon as they become available. We will evaluate drugs that are well known and have been used for many years around the world. We want to make treatments that are proven to be effective as widely and as rapidly available as possible. However, we do not want to give people medication that does not work, and may simply put them at unnecessary risk of side effects. At the moment we really do not have enough information about whether any benefits from taking these drugs outweigh any possible harms from these drugs. So, we do not know yet if these drugs work for COVID19, and that is why we urgently need to do a proper trial so we have the information we need to guide the provision of best care for all.

Patient Advice & Support

Patient Advice and Support Service The Patient Advice and Support Service (PASS) is delivered by the Scottish Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) Service. The service is independent and provides free, confidential information, advice and support to anyone who uses the NHS in Scotland. It aims to support patients, their carers and families in their dealings with the NHS and in other matters affecting their health.

The service promotes an awareness and understanding of the rights and responsibilities of patients. It also advises and supports people who wish to give feedback, make comments, raise concerns or make a complaint about treatment and care provided by the NHS in Scotland.

The Patient Advice and Support Service will: 

  • Help clients understand their rights and responsibilities as patients
  • Provide information, advice and support for those wishing to give feedback or comments, raise concerns or make complaints about health care delivered by NHS Scotland.
  • Ensure clients feel listened to, supported, and respected when raising concerns about difficult experiences
  • Work with the NHS to use feedback to improve NHS service provision.

The Patient Advice and Support Service also provides general advice and help on a range of issues, such as housing, employment, benefits or money worries. Support with these issues can have a positive impact on the health of clients. Clients can also access information and advice on how to access health and community services that offer additional support with health care needs. The service is a valuable resource for frontline NHS staff because it offers a wide range of support for patients in relation to health and health care.
